Vancouver Rundown Wednesday October 9, 2024
Summary
Plenty of jabs but no knock out blows - that’s what most viewers are saying about Tuesday evening’s televised leaders’ debate as B.C. voters get set to go to the advance polls. While David Eby and John Rustad exchanged accusations, Green leader Sonia Furstenau accused both of being aligned on privatizing B.C. healthcare. Most polls still show the NDP and Conservatives in a statistical tie heading into the Oct. 19 vote.
Other news…
Three homes have been destroyed and close to a dozen people have lost their belongings in a three alarm fire in Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood. The fire broke out just before 8:00 Monday evening. One person suffered smoke inhalation…it’s believed the fire started on a back deck of one of the homes.
Surrey has raised the fines for setting off fireworks or firecrackers. Maximum penalties for those without a permit will rise from $5000 to $50,000 while most fines will be about $400. Mayor Brenda Locke says there’s been a significant rise in complaints about fireworks.
Thick clouds and a few showers have blocked any chance of those on the ground around the Lower Mainland witnessing the northern lights over the past few days. But not so for those on some planes around B.C. Some passengers on flights from the northern parts of the province have reporting seeing beautiful streaks or green lights from their window seats. People right across the country - especially in Central Canada - have been able to see an unusually strong round of northern lights activity over the past several days.
Partly cloudy Wednesday with a chance of showers in the evening. Sunny on Thursday and Friday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
