Vancouver Rundown Wednesday October 30, 2024
Summary
Premier David Eby is reaching out to opposition members following word the NDP will form a thin, majority government. Eby says his party has its work cut-out noting British Columbians want more from their government. He’s not ruling out asking a BC Conservative to serve as Speaker of the House. The comments come in his first official news conference following the confirmation of results from the B.C. election.
Other news…
Vancouver will have to hold a city byelection to replace Christine Boyle. OneCity’s only member on council has started the process of resigning from City Hall so she can take-on her job as the newly elected NDP MLA for Vancouver-Little Mountain. The cost of running a byelection is about $2M.
No one was hurt after a large construction crane dropped its load at a site on East Hastings late Tuesday morning. Some witnesses posted details on social media saying a sling broke. Some pieces of metal fell but missed nearby cars. WorkSafeBC is investigating.
So far, the threat of $50-thousand fines is doing little to cut down on the bangs from firecrackers and fireworks in Surrey. The City brought in those maximum fines earlier this month after an increase in calls to police. Thursday is expected to be extra noisy as Halloween and Diwali fall on the same night.
Possible showers for Wednesday with gusty wind. A mix of sun and cloud for Thursday. Showers on Friday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
